Refleaf Cube

A cube that keeps changing its mind.

Refleaf came out of a collaboration between two disciplines that do not usually meet. Barbara Borko works in vector graphics and illustration; Studio Kresal works in glass and physical material. The cube is what happened when both methods were applied to the same object.

The process runs like this: a vector drawing is cut into a vinyl stencil and applied to the back of a mirror. Sandblasting removes the reflective layers underneath it, leaving a translucent pattern. The blasted surface is then selectively painted, so the drawing reads as white against the mirror.

Every mirror panel is set so the graphic runs continuously across the faces of the cube. As the room around it changes, the cube stays where it is and reflects the change — each side offering a different version of the same space. A simple object with a very small margin for error: every line, every millimetre has to land, or the pattern breaks.
